tldr; I love these glass jars for the pitcher method, you can also watch my Instagram reel where I demonstrate how-to do the "pitcher method"

The Pitcher Method

After 13 months of pumping with Hudson and now into month 10 with Charlie, I’ve learned a thing or two (or eighty) when it comes to storing pumped breastmilk (check out my recent posts about exclusively pumping). One of the best methods I’ve found to maximize storage bags and reduce costs is with the pitcher method. I love these glass jars.

Caveat: I want to caveat that there is science behind how incredible our breastmilk is, including foremilk and hindmilk, and the amount of fat or melatonin in your milk based on the time of the pump. The pitcher method will create a more consistent mix than if you were to bag each pump separately.

How to Store Pumped Breastmilk via the Pitcher Method

The pitcher method requires two containers to store milk in, one that is your “pitcher” and one that is your most recently pumped milk to follow the latest CDC standards (2022) states to not mix milk of different temperatures. I love these glass jars that have measurements to 32oz and lids, and bonus, comes in a 4 pack.

At the beginning of the day: Use a white erase marker or a rubber band to designate you “pitcher” and another to designate your “most recent”.

After each pump: Pour your refrigerated (cooled) milk from your “recent container” into your pitcher before adding fresh milk from your most recent pump into the container to cool before adding to your pitcher. Repeat after each pump.

Bagging: Depending on your milk volume you could bag milk daily, or between 1-4 days. When bagging, use a bottle (I use my comotomo bottle) to measure out the desired amount, bag, label and freeze flat. I love these bags.

Voila!
