Diaper Bag Essentials + Hacks

To avoid the never ending pit that can become the diaper bag here’s the essentials and some hacks we stick to for our diaper bag.

My husband picked the diaper bag as he more often takes the kids out and about as a stay at home dad and wanted something that he was also comfortable carrying. We love this backpack diaper bag from tactical baby gear.

Since we are in the stage of baby and toddler, this is geared more towards the early baby stage.

What’s in our diaper bag?

Diapers

  • Diapers – a good rule of thumb is a diaper per hour you will be away from home.
  • 1 pack of baby wipes – we love these ones and save money with Amazon Subscribe and Save.
  • Our favorite diaper back hack, Dog poop bags – the best for dirty diaper garbage on the go!
  • Diaper changing pad – we love to just use dog potty pads when on the go so that you can throw them out if they get messy!

Clothes / Blankets

  • 1 extra onesie / set of clothes (if potty training, an extra set of undies!)
  • 1 burp cloth – maybe more if you have a spit up probe baby
  • 1 swaddle blanket / Muslim blanket
    • Hack – tie around your neck for a nursing cover if you prefer to cover during feeds
  • 1 overnight diaper if you plan to be out close to bedtime for easy transfer when you get home

Sleep / Soothe

Snack / Drink

  • If your baby is old enough for food
  • If your baby is still drinking milk or breastfeeding
  • Bottle – we are big comotomo fans over here!
  • Milk
    • After freeze drying my breastmilk with Milkify (see blog post here) we leave a few packs of the singles in the diaper bag so that we never have to worry about keeping breastmilk cold or traveling with a cooler.
    • If you haven’t freeze dried yet…
      • We love this medicine/insulin cold pouch to keep bagged breastmilk cold.
      • If your baby won’t drink cold milk and you’re on the go we bring a hydro flask of hot water to drop the bag in to warm instead of hassling with a portable warmer
