Hack of the Day: Our Favorite Baby Monitor

Picking a baby monitor is no small feat. There are lots to consider when it comes to selecting the camera that is right for you; cost, picture clarity, travel capabilities, wifi vs no wifi, two-way talk, and portability.

We did research for months before choosing to purchase the Nanit and we were not disappointed. When Hudson transitioned to a toddler bed and was using a blanket we purchased a Miku for the non-wearable breathing technology. While we love both, the Nanit’s technology and ease of use makes it our favorite.

Other Camera Options

Miku: Breathing and movement monitoring. Has super clear video and great audio capabilities. I would have recommended this option over Nanit until they went bankrupt and after being acquired they now require a subscription for their core capabilities.

A super afforable ($25 as of this writing) option is the Wyze security camera that has detection recognition, records video clips and has great two-way audio. For the price if you don’t need breathing monitoring this is a great option with super easy setup and no monthly fees for the basic service.

Blink Security Camera is another great option for simple room monitoring but, because of the cost, only if you have an existing Blink system and you can just add an additional camera.

The Nanit Baby Monitor

Breathing Monitoring w/ Crystal Clear Vision – Video Monitoring Reinvented

At the heart of the Nanit Camera lies its exceptional video monitoring capabilities. Boasting HD resolution and crystal clear night vision, the Nanit Camera provides a detailed and vivid visual of your baby’s sleep environment.

The breathing monitoring technology with their insights subscription is a total gamechanger for peace of mind with a “Red Alert” if no motion is detected for 20 seconds. The one downfall here that the Miku levels up over the Nanit is that Nanit breathing technology only works with a breathing band on, unlike the Miku that can even detect breathing under blankets.

Real-Time Tracking and Insights

One standout feature of the Nanit Camera is its ability to track and analyze your baby’s sleep patterns in real-time. Equipped with advanced computer vision technology, the Nanit Camera provides insights into your baby’s sleep habits, helping you make informed decisions to promote healthy sleep development.

Our favorite feature is the dashboard view where it tells you how long your baby napped, and how long ago they woke up from their last nap — total nap window game changer.

Secure and Seamless Connectivity

The Nanit Camera ensures a secure and encrypted connection, keeping your baby’s data safe from prying eyes. Its seamless connectivity allows you to monitor your baby remotely through the Nanit app, providing peace of mind whether you’re in the next room or miles away.

When I’m traveling for work I can check in anytime to see how Charlie is doing, the best!

Two-Way Communication and Soothing Sounds

The Nanit Camera goes beyond traditional monitoring by incorporating two-way communication. This means you can comfort your baby from anywhere. Additionally, the Nanit Camera features a selection of calming sounds and lullabies and a built-in nightlight with timer.

This comes in handy when traveling as well where I can sing to Charlie if she’s upset or needs soothing. It’s so fun to see her reaction when she hears my voice come thru the camera.

Simple Design and Easy Installation

Aesthetics matter, and Nanit delivers on this front with its sleek and modern design. The camera is designed to blend seamlessly with any nursery decor. We installed ours using multiple 3M velcro strips.

Another alternative to hanging on the wall is this bendable clip design Universal Baby Monitor Holder that we attached to the side of the bassinet when babies were in our room and is great for on the go camera setup.

With its advanced features, real-time insights, breathing technology and commitment to security, the Nanit Camera gives us the peace of mind to make sure we all have a good night’s sleep.

Cons

The cons of the Nanit are few, namely the security is a barrier as you are not able to use it at hotels without setting up your own internet router. The other is the cost of the Insights can add up depending on which bundle you choose. We choose the cheapest option which limits our ability to look back in history, but serves its purpose for what we need and can budget.
